Austin A55
Cambridge
The post-war Cambridge first appeared in 1954 to replace the
A40 Somerset, reviving a name that had first appeared on a 10hp
model in 1936. Two versions were available – the 1.2-litre
A40 and 1.5-litre A50. From early 1937 these were replaced by
the A55 with a longer swept tail and a number of further
updates. A well-equipped family saloon with appealing
styling, the A55 Mk I was the last Austin to feature a body style
peculiar to the marque as, by late 1958, the all-new Farina-styled
models were to appear.
Presented here is a 1958 example of the A55 that has remained
in single-family ownership since new, the car passing to the
original purchaser’s daughter upon his death. The car is
reported as being in a condition commensurate with the very low
recorded mileage, which stands at just
38,060 at time of writing. Finished
in black with red leather trim, the seats have been protected by
covers since new and the car is, as would be expected, said to be
original and correct in every detail. It has been maintained
by the same garage for the past 49 years and since 1989 is
understood to have covered just 712 miles.
Offered for sale with great reluctance due to the owner having
given up driving, the car has a Swansea registration document, a
number of service bills etc. plus many previous MOT certificates,
original sales brochure and current MOT valid until 10th
July 2007.
